This was an epic ski / hike to Mount Madison on a cold and very windy day. Eight participants started the adventure on back country skis from the Dolly Copp parking area along the Great Gulf Link and then the Great Gulf trail to the Osgood Trail. There we stashed our skis and changed to hiking boots to continue on the Osgood Trail where five of the eight made it to the peak.
There is a lot of exposure on this hike and I found myself blown off balance all the way to the peak in the 35 mph winds (measured with my anemometer). There were sections where I had to almost crawl by hanging onto nearby rocks and grabbing cairns. The peak seemed a long way off and travel was very slow. But it was a thrill and I loved it!
The conditions were such that we finished this 13 mile hike on skis in the dark but fortunately on the easy and flat last few miles. Thanks to Dan and Jeff for the pictures.
